papier mache, aluminum screen, hardware cloth, mirrors
7' x 6' x 2'
The Mestiza Mask Rack offers a choice of identities. The viewer may select one or alternate between both a conquistador mask (a replica of Peruvian festival masks) or a wire mask of simulated indigenousness (recalling screen masks found throughout South Central and Caribbean America) . The surrounding mirrors (emblems of Oshun, an African Yoruba deity) invite reflection on self image.
